Antequera Vacachavez, aNGEL

Civil Engineer licensed at the Gabriel Rene Moreno Autonomous University. Architecture graduate of the Private University of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Master in Parametric Design in Architecture by the UPC. 11 years as engineering manager of ANSA Consultores S.R.L., 14 years of professional experience in works involving simulation by finite elements, metal structures, reinforced concrete and wood within the civil and industrial field.

 

DE SOLà MORALES, PAU

He holds a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from ETSAB (1993) and a PhD in Design from Harvard University (2000). He specializes in "architecture, information and complexity", and in the use and application of information technologies in architecture and design, areas in which he has written numerous articles. Since 2001, he has been a visiting professor at the Harvard Design School, and is a professor and head of the computer science department of the Accademia d'Architettura at the University of Italian Switzerland. He is currently the director of the architecture school from Reus (URV), where he teaches architecture theory and representation techniques.

 

MOLINOS, ROBERTO

Roberto co-founded Modelical in late 2011. Prior to that he worked for SENER and IDOM as architect and parametric design specialist. He regularly lectures on Geometry Modeling, BIM and Technology Management at IE School of Architecture and Design, IE University Madrid. Roberto earned a Bachelor in Architecture from Barcelona Tech and holds a Master in Structural Design from Madrid Tech.

Boixader Ibañez, Dionis

Mathematician. PhD in Mathematics at the UPC. Associate Professor at UPC- ETSAV. Head of technology department. Dionis specializes in fuzzy logic and geometry.

 

GODOY, ALFONSO

Master in Sustainability from Barcelona Tech. PhD student in the UPC's Sustainability Programme. Co-founder of the architectural cooperative arqbag. He has also developed his professional and research activity at the Institut de Recerca de l'Energia de Catalunya (IREC). He works on topics such as comfort, energy efficiency and thermal simulation of buildings.  Member of the Board of Directors of IBPSA Spain. He shares his activity in Arqbag with teaching at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, the Universitat de Barcelona-IL3 and Barcelona Tech.

 

Nebot, Jordi

Architect, is principal of Arquitectura Agronomia, a landscape  architecture firm based in Barcelona. In the last 20 years he has been involved in some of the most important contemporary landscape architecture projects in Europe. Nebot was lecturer at the Department of Architecture at UVA from 2012-2014 and previously was professor at the Master of Landscape Architecture at UPC Barcelona, and taught Architectural Analysis (Project I) at School of Architecture de la Salle of Barcelona. Nebot earned a Master in Architecture at the School of Architecture of Valles UPC.

BRANDT-OLSEN, CECILIE

Structural engineer specialized in computational design. The relationship between geometry and structural performance has been one of my main focus areas during my studies.

She is passionate about non-standard projects with a need to improve existing workflows and develop innovative solutions using cutting edge technology. I have a keen interest in using parametric design approaches to make structural engineering an integral part of the early stage design and thereby enable more informed decisions to be made and structurally elegant solutions to evolve.

 

Leon, David Andres

David is an architect with focus in computational design and robotic fabrication. He holds an ICD Master of Science Degree and an Elisava Master's Degree in Advanced Design and Digital Architecture. He has been involved in several research undertakings of which stand out his participation in German research platform FAT-LAB and his collaboration as a research assistant in CITA for the EU-Horizon 2020 Future and Emerging Technologies Proactive Action project Flora Robotica. David is also the co-author of publications of architectural research and robotics.

 

Quintero Avila, Juan Pablo

Venezuelan architect and designer based in Barcelona, pioneer in the use of emerging processes of digital manufacture applied to design and architecture. He is the founder of Medio Design, a studio-workshop dedicated to the development of non-standard projects through mixed processes that include both traditional manufacturing techniques and new manufacturing tools.

Calatayud Souweine, Daniel

Architect. Research Professor. Department of Urbanism and Regional Planning (UPC). Author of eleven articles in scientific journals, nine book chapters and twelve papers in national and international conferences on issues of sustainable urban design, sustainable building, urban metabolism and climate change. Faculty member's participation in the Solar Decathlon ETSAV 2010.

 

MARTIN, ALIson GRACE

Independent researcher studying natural structures and complex patterns in nature and applying the findings to design and construction concepts. She runs courses in UK and European universities on experimental methods in form-finding, and especially in weaving techniques, topology and materials geometry. She studied at Exeter College of Art and St. Martin's College of Art and Design, graduating in Graphic Design in 1979.

 

RYNNE, ALAN

Building Engineer with a broad skill set ranging from Architectural Design & Construction Management to Web & Software Development. Alan specialises in rationalizing freeform surfaces in Architecture; optimizing structural behavior and construction processes; and developing new tools with C# to help in those tasks.

 

TORRES, BELEN

Belen is an architect with focus in data-driven design and digital fabrication. She holds a UPC Master Degree in Architecture, an Elisava Master’s Degree in Advanced Design and Digital Architecture and a ICD/ITKE Master of Science Degree. Belen has worked as research assistant at the ILEK and ICD. She has been actively involved in several applied research projects, among them her collaboration with FAT-LAB, a research platform based in Stuttgart, Germany.

PhD in Architecture. He was a professor at the Department of Architectural Technology at UPC. Research member of LITA and CODA, has developed his work on: analysis and programming, tensile structures, membranes, cables and solar stereographics studies. He was director of ETSAV UPC, council member of EAAE, coordinator of the Architecture & Civil Engineering of CLUSTER. He has taught masterclasses in United Kingdom, Belgium, Turkey, Brasil, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica.

Soriano botella, Enrique

Architect by ETSAV UPC. PhD candidate at UPC. CODA associate partner and researcher at LITA UPC. As an intern FPI-UPC has taught in the course “Parametric Architecture” on ETSAV. Lecturer at ETSAV in Geometry department. He has taught workshops and classes on the use of wood in the computational design at universities in Madrid, Norway, Austria, Hungary and Donosti.

Professor at the École des Ponts Paristech in structural engineering, Professor at the school of architecture of Grenoble and Head of "Computational Design" in the advanced master Design by Data at École des Ponts Paristech. He is researcher at the labs Navier and GSA. He is editor in chief of the international journal of space structures. His researches are on structural engineering, rationalization of the construction of free-form structures and life cycle analysis. He also developed some structural concepts such as elastics gridshells in CFRP, nexorades.

Structural engineer at BAC. UK

Studied Industrial Engineering in Spain specializing in Architectural Structures. He qualified as a Master Engineer in 1999, whilst working with BAC Barcelona as structural consultant. He is partner, a member of the main board and is Deputy Building GM in BAC. In 2014 he finishes MAMD. He is especially interested in sustainable architecture and expressed structures, and has been fortunate to work on many striking buildings over the last 20 years. He is responsible for many specialist fields within the business including CFD Analysis and wind modelling both for structural performance and personal comfort.

His work is focused on the integration of highly interactive physically-based modeling techniques within design practices with the aim of developing novel user-model interactions and extend the modeling freedom in the design of structures whose shapes are derived from material properties and non-linear behaviors. M. JURADO

Cartographer at Heligrafics

Studied Geomatic Engineering at UPV (Valencia) and Masters in Geodesy and Cartography at UPM (Madrid). After his internship at the Department of Remote Sensing at IGN (Spanish Geographic Institute of Spain) he started his career as cartographer in Australia, involved in mapping topographical maps in the Outback and collaborating with Airborne Research Australia (ARA). His research interest focuses on Mountain Cartography and LiDAR data processing.

Professor for Design and Structural Engineering at the Universität der Künste Berlin. His research focuses on digital and physical prototyping in architecture and engineering, computational design and new material systems. Gengnagel studied construction engineering and architecture at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Technische Universität München. He holds a PhD from Technische Universität München and was formerly a structural engineer at DYWIDAG München, Barthel & Maus and a.ka. Ingenieure. He is also a consulting partner of the engineering firm Bollinger + Grohmann and has held academic positions at Technische Universität München and the Royal Academy of the Arts Copenhagen.

Gianluca grew up and studied in Bologna nested between Tortellini, Mordatella and some Engineering. During the master degree he worked as an Architect for Mario Cucinella Architect while helping a bit the foundation of the first FabLab of Bologna. His master thesis was about mycelium tectonics: a biological study about some growing adaptive systems. Since 3 years he's fully engaged with D2P working on international projects and maturing experience in digital fabrication and complex geometries.

is doctoral research focuses on fabrication-aware design of free-form architectural envelopes. He has an engineering diploma from Ecole Polytechnique in France. He worked as a project engineer for COWI North America, where he was in charge of the geometry control of the Oculus Transportation Hub in New York during its construction phase. He also worked at Leicht Structures where he designed non-standard facade structures.

A. MAJANO

PhD Architect at Technical University of Madrid (UPM)

Head of the Laboratory of Structures at ETSAM and Associate Professor of the Department of Building Structures and Physics. Research focused on the structural use of timber, including material characterization, joints behavior and the development of wood-based products. Recent research activities deal with the rheological behavior of elastically curved timber laths and the development of computational models for the analysis of timber gridshells. She participated in the design and construction of a permanent elastic gridshell made of Eucalyptus globulus.

Both an architect and structural engineer, John has been working with computational design for over ten years across practice and academia. Following a doctorate at The University of Bath, he led the computational design team at Ramboll engineers in London before becoming lecturer in Architecture at the University of Reading, UK. His current research interests lie in interactive evolution, structural form-finding, genetic programming and machine learning for design exploration.

Helmut Pottmann is a professor of Applied Geometry and director of the Center for Geometry and Computational Design at Vienna University of Technology. From 2009-2013, he has been director of the Geometric Modeling and Scientific Visualization Center at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. His research interests are in Applied Geometry and Visual Computing, in particular in Geometric Modeling, Geometry Processing and most recently in Geometric Computing for Architecture and Manufacturing

Director of the Computer Graphics and Geometry Laboratory. His research interests include geometry processing, computational design, digital fabrication, and architectural geometry. He is fortunate to collaborate with many outstanding individuals to explore ideas around geometry, math, algorithms, design, and art. Mark has co-founded two start-ups, Faceshift in 2012 and Rayform in 2016.

Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the Civil Engineering School of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). He has designed and assisted the construction of shell and spatial structures as well as urban bridges of medium span. His recent research is focused on computational modelling of very flexible structures and the applications to bending-active structures. His research activities cover: design of movable structures, development of numerical models for flexible structures at several scales and applications of fiber concrete for shell-like structures and recycled concrete in structural bridge slabs.

Jorge Duro and Laia Mogas graduated from UPC ETSAV and co-direct DumoLab. Jorge is PhD from the MIT MediaLab Mediated Matter. He develops his dissertation on novel virtual-to-physical theoretical and applied digital design methods Fabrication Information Modeling. He is an Architect and a mechanical engineer with a focus on structural design and construction. He has taught and collaborated with research groups at MIT and Harvard. Laia is a licensed Architect and researcher interested in biological material practices in design. Laia is trained in Architecture and Fine Arts, and in Digital Fabrication and Biochemistry in USA. She is now based at the Silklab at Tufts Biomedical Engineering working on design and development of functional biomaterial products.

Raul implements cultural prospection in technological areas: interaction and interfaces, domestic digital manufacturing and rapid prototyping, web and mobile technology, ubiquitous computing and the Internet of things, and others frame his production and teaching. He works in the exploration of new imagery and its impact in the construction of society and contemporary culture: digital divide, knowledge democratization, prosumerism, emergent phenomena, micropolitics. Regularly teaches workshops on different diy technologies to very different people, while takes part in different programs at designs schools in Barcelona.

He received his PhD summa cum laude from the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) at the University of Stuttgart. His thesis focused on bending-active structures, with particular emphasis on the geometry and mechanics of shells and plates and their numerical simulation. He is now project manager at str.ucture GmbH and has been guest professor at the Chair for Structural Design and Technology (KET) of the UdK Berlin (2017-2018). In his research he focuses on simulation technology, innovative structural systems, and new materials for building applications.

PhD at the Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of Southern California. His research field spans from the development of performance driven design tools to variable property fabrication using robotic fabrication and 3D printing technologies. Evan holds a Masters of Advanced studies in the field of Computer Aided Architectural Design from the ETH in Zurich. His latest research work is focusing on multi agent design systems and their implementation for architectural design purposes.

Sructural engineer and researcher at Bollinger–Grohmann. Germany

He started his career as a researcher at the Institute for Structural Concrete at the Technical University Vienna. Since 2008 Clemens is working for the structural engineering company Bollinger–Grohmann. He currently heads the department ’Digital Simulation’ which investigates possibilities to bring computational modeling techniques into early stage architectural design. Clemens is developing the parametric interactive Finite Element program ‘Karamba’ as a freelancer. He holds a PhD in Structural Engineering from the TU Vienna.

the head of the development and execution of Lanik research projects. Expert in the design and calculation of free forms surfaces, he has participated in most of the most complex projects developed in LANIK: Madrid City Council, Buesa Arena in Vitoria, VTB Arena in Moscow, Center Commercial Prado in Marseille and more. He has also directed multiple developments for patents such as the TSL (Timber Single Layer) system.

Structural engineer at Laboratoire Navier. France

Structural engineer from l’École des Ponts in Paris. He entered l’École des Ponts in 2012, following the double curriculum in ‘structure and architecture’ with the architecture school of Marne. Worked in the structural engineering office Bollinger + Grohmann in Frankfurt. His master’s thesis with the Block Research Group tackles the design of force patterns for funicular form finding. Currently pursuing his joint PhD with the Laboratoire Navier at l’École des Ponts in Paris and the Block Research Group at ETH Zürich on topology finding of force and structural patterns for shell and gridshell structures.

B.Felbrich

Architect and researcher at ICD/ITKE. Germany

Worked for .V. Doshi in Ahmedabad, India, and Behnisch Architekten in Stuttgart, Germany, and graduated with an award-winning scientific diploma thesis in which he developed a folding robotic multi-agent system. At ICD he worked on bio-inspired robotic 3D-printing, multi-machine fabrication of a large scale CFRP. Since 2016 he has been developing the physics simulation engine FlexHopper and the GPU-based AI engine Crow. Benjamin has a profound interest in high performance computation for design applications, robotic fabrication systems and machine communication infrastructures.
